The spiral is the primordial Celtic pattern, this since the 1st & 2nd Iron Age (civilizations of Hallstatt & La Tène), ie from the second millennium BC. We find spirals ornamenting pottery & ceramics, stones and metals from this period.
Over time, the forms became more complex as can be seen in illuminations from Hiberno-Saxon manuscripts (MSS. Kells, Lindisfarne, etc.).
By successive simplifications, the three-branch spiral has become the triskelion that we see today everywhere in Brittany.
